Information about WEEE

The Waste & Electronic Equipment Regulations (WEEE)

We are committed to help save the environment and we would always recommend products get repaired rather than disposed off. However, we recognise that this is not always a practical solution. Therefore, in keeping with the WEEE Directive we will assist our customers in helping to save the environment.

Collection

We will collect and dispose of WEEE product free of charge, Ref: More Information on WEEE, providing that:

the product is a “like for like” or equivalent replacement i.e. “new for old” which has been purchased from us.

If we have collected a product for repair and have not been able to repair the product we will either return the product to you if you wish or dispose of the product for you.

In-Store Take-Back

If you have brought the product in for repair and have not been able to repair the product you either have the option of collecting the product or we can dispose of the product for you.

If you purchase a “like for like” or equivalent product from us i.e. “new for old” and you have brought the product into the shop we will dispose of the old product for you free of charge.

More on WEEE...

What is WEEE?

WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, this includes battery powered items. WEEE has been broken down into ten product categories:

Large household appliances
Small household appliances
IT & telecommunications equipment
Consumer equipment
Lighting equipment
Electrical and electronic tools
Toys, leisure and sports equipment
Medical devices
Monitoring & control equipment
Automatic dispensers

Like for Like

If you are buying a new microwave oven you would be entitled to ask us to take-back your old microwave oven. We would however not be expected to take back a completely different type of product ie a washing machine for your microwave oven.

Equivalent "WEEE”

If you have an old video cassette recorder and are purchasing a new DVD player/recorder, this would count as equivalent because even though this is not strictly a “like for like” replacement, the new product is intended to do the same function i.e. record and or playback Repaired Products

Items intended for repair and return repaired are not regarded as waste. However, once it becomes clear that items are beyond repair should be regarded as per the WEEE directive. Consumer’s Responsibilities

Note: EEE means Electrical and Electronic Equipment: TV’s, washing machines etc.

You have no legal obligations under the WEEE Regulations. As a private householder who uses EEE, the WEEE Regulations encourage you to play your part in the separate collection of WEEE, when you discard it as waste. In the UK you do not have to purchase EEE to take advantage of this. You will have the ability to deposit of your EEE in specific areas at civic amenity (CA) sites across the UK and at other specific collection facilities. You may also ask for information from a retailer of EEE about the options and collection facilities available to you in your local area for disposing of EEE.

Where a retailer is offering in-store take-back, he must accept your old equipment on a like-for-like (old for new) basis when you make a replacement purchase of new or equivalent equipment. If you do not purchase new EEE the retailer is not obliged to accept your old EEE.

The WEEE Regulations do not give you an entitlement to free collection of your EEE from your home. Existing home collection on delivery services, Local Authority bulky waste collections and collection by the Charitable and Voluntary Sector remain unaffected.
